New York State (NYS) categorizes child care into two groupings:
Not required to be
registered by NYS
In home /nanny care
Informal care—takes place in the providers home for 1 or 2
children plus the providers'’ children
Nursery Schools that meet for 3 hours a day or less (may voluntarily
register)
Required to be registered
or licensed by NYS
Family Child Care Homes--Can accommodate up to six children ages
6 weeks to 12 years old. The maximum is five if any child is under
two. May add two school age children.
Group Family Child Care Homes—Up to 12 children six weeks to 12 years
old. Maximum of ten if any under two. May add two school age children.
Childcare Centers/Nursery Schools that meet for more than three
hours. Care for more than six 6 weeks to 12 weeks old.
